Word On The Water

London’s Floating Book Barge

If you’ve ever dreamed of browsing books while gently bobbing on the water, Word On The Water (the London Book Barge) is the quirky canalside gem you didn’t know you needed. Moored on the Regent’s Canal near Granary Square in King’s Cross, this 1920s Dutch barge turned independent bookshop is one of those delightful London surprises that feels equal parts magical and wonderfully practical.

A Quick Splash of History

The story starts in 2011 when two book-loving mates, Jon and Paddy, decided to combine their passions for literature and life on the water. What began as a scrappy floating venture has grown into a beloved London institution. After some wandering along the canal network, it found its forever home (or should we say forever float? 😂) at Granary Square. In 2022, the barge got a lovely refurb, expanding its charm without losing that cozy, lived-in feel. It’s survived storms, lockdowns, and the occasional grumpy swan — true London resilience with a literary twist.

What They Sell

Step aboard and you’re surrounded by floor-to-ceiling shelves crammed with new and second-hand books across every genre you can imagine: literary fiction, cult classics, children’s treasures, poetry, politics, and plenty of local interest titles. It’s not overwhelming - just thoughtfully curated so you’ll always leave with something unexpected. Bonus: friendly dogs often greet you, and there’s a warm stove for those chilly canal days.

Pro tip: Grab a coffee nearby at News & Coffee or Redemption Roasters and settle in with your find. ☕

Events & Quirky Vibes

This isn’t just a shop — it’s a floating cultural hub. They host live music on the roof deck (jazz nights on the water is the perfect combo), poetry slams, author talks, open mics, and creative writing workshops. In summer, the solar-powered sound system turns the top into a proper little venue. It’s delightfully eccentric: fairy lights, floral touches, vintage typewriters tucked between stacks, and that gentle rocking that makes you feel like you’ve escaped the city chaos for a moment.

Word on the Water proves London’s best spots often float just off the beaten path. Whether you’re a hardcore bibliophile or just fancy a charming detour, it’s pure bookish joy with a side of sass and serenity. Highly recommended — just watch your step getting on (and off) the barge. You might sail away with more than you planned. 📖 ⚓ 🚤
