Acting legend Danny Trejo has opened his first Mexican restaurant in the UK last year. Located on Portobello Road, this taqueria is stylish and modern with outdoor seating, a fully stocked bar and a small club for private events downstairs.
The bar specialises in margaritas and unique cocktails, so there's a drink for everyone including mocktails featuring Trejo's Spirits Zero Proof Tequila for the designated drivers.
Served in traditional cactus glasses, the frozen margaritas are the best we've tried in the UK and ideal for cooling down on a hot day. We loved the Frozen Strawberry Margarita and super spicy Jalapeño Margarita with El Rayo Blanco, Triple Sec, fresh lime, agave and jalapeño.
When it comes to food, Trejo's take traditional Mexican ingredients and combine them with cuisines from around the world for a menu to create brand new flavours.
The Nachos are dangerously moreish - we had to be careful not to fill ourselves up before the rest of the meal! They're topped with beans, cheese, jalapeños and chipotle crema. We highly recommend adding the Guacamole, which was incredible with hass avocados, onion, green chiles, lime, cilantro and crushed pistachios sprinkled on top.
It would be a crime to visit Trejo's without trying the tacos, which are each unique in their own way and full of flavour making it hard to pick.
The Carnitas Taco is one of Danny's favourites and we can see why with tender slow-cooked pork, pineapple, red onion, cilantro and fermented hot sauce.
Perfect for vegans, the Mushroom Asada Taco is delicious with mushroom, pepita pesto and verde slaw, while meat-eaters can try something a little different with the Cheeseburger Taco, a surprising combination that really works of beef burger, nacho cheese, red onion, cilantro, cherry tomato, cheese mix and bacon.
Our favourite was the O.G. Beer Battered Fish Taco with pineapple salad, chipotle slaw and vegan avocado crema topped with a gigantic beer battered cod. It really puts a new spin on Fish & Chips!
The most important meal of the day is given a Mexican twist with the Breakfast Burrito. Filled with scrambled eggs, cheese, bean dip, tater tots, salsa and tortilla strips, it's the ideal way to start the day!
Coming with Danny's seal of approval, the Beef Barbacoa Burrito is a must try with Pico de gallo, tortilla strips, Cotija cheese, beans, cheese and rice. Another thing that really impressed us was the tortilla which was tender, buttery and flakey - unlike any other we've had. I wonder if we can ask him for the recipe?!
A delicious and completely unique experience, we can't recommend Trejo's Tacos highly enough, so check out the menu and book a table for yourself!
